The Papua New Guinea Minister for Information  and Communications Technology (ICT), Hon. Timothy Masiu, concluded a highly successful visit to Solomon Islands on August 12, 2024, focusing on  forging stronger ties with  Minister for Communication, Hon. Fredrick Kologeta.

 The meeting, which took place from 10-12  August,  focused on enhancing collaboration between the ICT sectors of both  countries, and at same time, addressing  their  shared challenges.

Hon. Masiu expressed his satisfaction with the outcomes of the discussions, stating, “The meeting was very, very successful. It was a very good meeting where we discussed a wide range of issues facing our ministries. We also explored how we can collaborate more effectively to benefit both our countries and improve our respective ICT sectors.”

Both Ministers  discussed  various issues, including connectivity, accessibility, and inclusivity in telecommunications.

Mr Masiu emphasized the importance of ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital space, highlighting the similarities between Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands in these areas.

During his visit, Minister Masiu also acknowledged the efforts of his counterpart, Hon. Kologeta, and thanked the Solomon Islands government and people for their warm hospitality.

He further noted the significance of his visit in light of recent elections and the transition to new leadership in Solomon Islands.

“We also took this opportunity to update Minister Kologeta on our progress in the Pacific ICT sector,” Mr  Masiu added.

“Our collaboration dates back to the Pacific ICT Dialogue in 2023, where we signed the ‘Lagatoi Declaration.’ We resolved to meet again in New Caledonia in 2025, and this visit was to brief Minister Frederick on our ongoing efforts and achievements.”

The visit marks a continued commitment to fostering stronger ties and collaboration between Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands, setting the stage for future advancements in the region’s ICT landscape.
