Prime Minister Hon. James Marape officially launched the National Broadcasting Corporation’s (NBC) newest station, Maus Bilong Tumbe, in the heart of North Waghi, Jiwaka Province.
The driving force behind this “impact project” was the ICT Minister Hon. Timothy Masiu and Jiwaka Governor Hon. Simon Kaiwi who accompanied Prime Minister in commissioning NBC Jiwaka.
The appropriately named “Nek Bilong Tumbe” carries a deep cultural significance. As Governor Kaiwi eloquently shared, the Bird of Paradise embodies the vibrant spirit and beauty of Jiwaka and the country. This namesake station promises to become a beacon of information, cultural expression, and empowerment for the people of Jiwaka.
Hon. Benjamin Mul, Member for North Waghi, underscored the crucial role of ICT in fostering connectivity and an informed society.
He further solidified his commitment to the station’s success by announcing prime space for NBC Jiwaka in a pipeline five-story district office, solidifying its presence in the heart of the community.
Minister Masiu emphasized the vital role of radio stations in nation-building. He stressed that access to reliable information is fundamental for any developing province, and “Maus Bilong Tumbe” will bridge the gap, empowering the people of Jiwaka with knowledge and a platform to be heard.
“I thank the Prime Minister for officially opening NBC Jiwaka, and I acknowledge the Managing Director for NBC Mr Kora Nou and your technical team for your hard work in establishing this station.
Minister Masiu stated that it is a temporary location, and staff were recruited from Mt Hagen and Simbu to initiate NBC Jiwaka, “we will recruit more as we move forward.”
A permanent location for the station is still being discussed with the Jiwaka government.
“I commend Hon. Benjamin Mul, for his commitment, care and interest in ensuring that NBC Jiwaka is finally on air.
“The Government has provided what we’ve promised, and I expect the NBC Management to ensure that NBC Jiwaka is fully staffed and maintains broadcast, both from the local frequency of 95.5 FM, and the relay of National Radio from Port Moresby on 90.7 FM.”
Prime Minister Marape echoed Minister Masiu’s sentiment on an informed society, applauding ICT Minister for revitalizing NBC and recognizing its power to disseminate accurate information and drive positive change.
“I urge the people of Jiwaka to embrace the station, not just as a source of news, but as a tool for development and progress.”
The ceremony concluded with a K1 million pledge from the Prime Minister towards staff housing for NBC Jiwaka. This commitment cements the government’s dedication to ensuring the station’s long-term sustainability and success.
The launch of “Nek Bilong Tumbe” marks a new chapter for Jiwaka Province. It signifies a promise of connection, knowledge, and a platform for amplifying local voices. As the children who witnessed the ceremony envision their future, the hope is that NBC Jiwaka will become a springboard for their aspirations, soaring high like the majestic Bird of Paradise that graces its name.
