As part of the Universal Access & Service (UAS) Connect the Schools Program, led by the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA), ICT Minister Hon. Timothy Masiu launched the new ICT Learning Centre for the Tubuseria Junior High School last week Friday.
The new ICT learning center gives students better access to digital education, which means they have vast information resources as well as digital tools to improve their education.
The launch event was attended by Member for Hiri-Koiari, Hon. Keith Iduhu; President of Hiri, Hon. Haoda Rogea; NICTA CEO, Mr. Kila Gulo-Vui; NBC Acting Managing Director, Mr. Kora Nou; and members of the Tubuseria community.
ICT Minister Hon. Timothy Masiu said this project, developed with NICTA, is one of many that will help connect our schools and communities to the digital world.
“The Government of Papua New Guinea understands how important ICT is. We are committed to making sure that every citizen can benefit from digital technology,” Masiu stated.
Minister Masiu explained that the new ICT Centre is part of a larger plan to provide affordable and reliable internet services to schools across the country.
“This project will help students and teachers by giving them access to digital resources. It will also help the wider community where possible,” He said.
The project will help rural and remote areas that do not have good internet access: “Through this initiative, we are making sure that remote communities are not left behind but are connected to the digital world.”
“This project shows what we can achieve when we work together. With the support of different stakeholders, we can ensure this project continues to benefit students and communities in the long term.”
Minister Masiu said the goal now is to roll this project out across the country so that more children can have access to these services. However, he also emphasized the need for responsible use of technology.
“I know that new technology can have some negative effects, but we must move forward, or we will be left behind. I urge those managing this project to put proper controls in place so that the system is not misused.”
