Secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology, Mr. Steven Matainaho called for a digital transformation among Papua New Guinea’s youth, emphasizing the vital role of communication technology in fostering innovation and economic opportunity.
In his address during the NCD Youth Expo and Summitt 2024, at APEC Haus today, Mr Matainaho underscores the relevance of communication, as being “enhanced by times of change.”
“The power to transform, innovate, and communicate is now at our fingertips with smartphones,” Secretary Matainaho made this known when highlighting the importance of accessible technology in driving progress.
He encouraged young people to leverage social media platforms for content creation and financial gain, noting.
“When we try to monetize content, it’s a function of human nature. Monetization has different approaches and options like ads on YouTube and Facebook are available”.
Mr Matainaho outlined the requirements for creators to tap into these revenue streams, emphasizing the importance of obtaining verified accounts.
“For example, if you have a Facebook account, you have to obtain the blue tick verification on facebook, there will be monetization options available. You will have to work through some requirements,” Mr Matainaho explained.
Mr Matainaho placed emphasis on the existing challenges with payment systems, and called for greater awareness on available solutions.
“We need to provide a little bit more awareness about how to access partnerships and financial support.”
Mr Matainaho also discussed the significance of quality content and collaboration within the community, adding, “There’s a need for guidance, whether that comes from the government or social media platforms.
“Quality content is what we are committed to,” he asserted, urging young creators to rise above negative criticism.
Secretary Matainaho further encouraged content creators to understand their unique value and market their influence to private companies, urging them to harness their digital potential for impact and income.
