Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Lands and Physical Planning, Hon. John Rosso during the opening of the 27th Pacific Islands Telecommunication Association Meeting on Monday 29 May 2023.
Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Lands and Physical Planning, Hon. John Rosso underscored the significance of prioritizing cybersecurity and addressing regional competencies in managing, safeguarding, and protecting valuable information and communications (ICT) systems and infrastructures.
Hon. Rosso made these remarks during his address at the opening of the Pacific Island Telecommunication Association’s 27th AGM Business Forum and Expo in Port Moresby’s Hilton Hotel on Monday 29 May 2023.
Mr Rosso emphasized the need to examine the way people utilize social media and stressing the importance of holding individuals accountable for their statements.
In a world plagued by misinformation and disinformation, he stressed that individuals should be responsible for their words.
“Our people must be shielded from those who propagate falsehoods and misinformation, and individuals spreading such information should be held accountable,” Hon. Rosso asserted.
He clarified that this approach does not infringe upon media freedom but rather focuses on promoting factual information and discouraging the dissemination of misleading or misinterpreted data.
While urging the preservation and respect for Pacific cultures, Hon. Rosso emphasized the necessity of adapting to global changes, while at the same time, recognizing the growing interest in the Pacific region worldwide, and the importance of presenting a united voice.
Mr Rosso extended a warm welcome to all the distinguished guests visiting Papua New Guinea and encouraged them to forge meaningful connections with Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands.
He echoed the sentiment expressed by Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during his visit, emphasizing the need for the Pacific to function as a commonwealth, uniting the region.
