The Minister for Information and Communications Technology Hon. Timothy Masiu participated on behalf of the PNG Government, in various decision-making processes at the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (PP-22) in Bucharest, Romania.
The conference commenced today (Monday 26 September 2022).
The ITU PP-22 activities include, setting ITU’s general policies; adopts four-year strategic and financial plans; and elects the senior management team, member states of the council and the members of the radio regulations board.
The Ministry will be supporting 23 common proposals (modified and new) that are being put forward to the Conferences.
In his Ministerial Statement, Minister Masiu thanked ITU for their continued support and cooperation to a developing member state such as PNG and highlighted the process PNG has made initially with the PNG Transformation Policy 2020, The Digital Government Act 2022 and the Digital Government Plan 2023-2027.
Minister Masiu has committed to support ITU resolution proposals and ITU candidates in return for increased support to developing member nations and to PNG.
The notable proposals include; the admission of sector members from developing countries to participate in the work of the ITU Radiocommunication Sector and the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector, Adoption of the Internet Provide v6 and to facilitate the transmissions from IPv4 to IPv6.
Other proposals included assisting member states to combat and deter mobile device theft, facilitating of Internet of things and smart sustainable cities and communities and ITU’s Role in Child Online Protection.
While participating at the PP-22, the PNG Ministry of ICT has arranged to meet with Apple Inc, SpaceX and various bilateral partners to negotiate support through the ITU for adoption of technologies and development projects suited for developing countries such as Papua New Guinea.
The Ministry of ICT Team consisted of heads from the National ICT Authority (NICTA) and the Department of ICT.
All proposals being put forward by Papua New Guinea are made available to stakeholders and the public at www.nicta.gov.pg .
Minister Masiu also met with the Minister for Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan Hon Rashad Nabiyev, Japanese candidate for the Director of the ITU Telecommunications Standardization Bureau Mr Onoe Seizo, Director of Radiocommunication Bureau of the ITU Mr Mario Maniewicz and Malaysian Minister for Communications and Multimedia Tan Sri TPr Annuar Bin Haji Musa.
